Just Being Me!

If there is one thing I have learned over the past year it is that I am who I am.

A favorite quote of mine is: “The hardest challenge is to be yourself in a world where everyone is trying to make you be somebody else.”

For many years of my life I did what others expected me to do, wanted me to do or what I thought I should be doing. I would put aside who I really was, what I was really thinking or what I wanted to do so I wouldn’t “rock the boat” and so I could “fit in”.

Part of me was scared that people wouldn’t like me if they knew what I was really thinking or if I went against the grain. Now I realize that those people never really liked ME….how could they? They didn’t know ME. They just liked the illusion because it was what was expected….the quote on quote “norm”.

I now try my hardest to stay true to myself. I say what I feel. I call a spade a spade and I don’t sugar coat anything. I refuse to do something just because everyone else is or because that’s what’s expected of me.

Now the tricky part of this is that I refuse to quit being myself for my business. As a Beachbody Coach the “norm” is to always be upbeat, positive and basically a cheerleader. I have no problem doing that as the average person yearns to be happy and I want to see people have success. This is why I became a coach (well the discount is nice too – just being honest).  However I will not mask that fact that I am human. I have good days and I have bad days. I have things that bother me, I speak my mind and yes, I use foul language. (GASP!!)

This is who I am and I refuse to change myself at all, for any reason. I know that this might hold me back as a coach to an extent but I’m ok with that. I would rather have it take me longer to be successful and have a team of people who like me for me, instead of who they think I am.

I tend to talk to people who are real with their feelings and who are truthful in what’s going on over those who portray a constant upbeat persona. I have more respect for people who can open up and be honest that life is not always a bed of roses and there are obstacles in life.

Ultimately it comes down to my favorite Dr. Seuss quote: “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

Back On Track

This past week I found myself unmotivated and quickly turning into a fitness train wreck.

I wasn’t planning my meals, I wasn’t doing my workout first thing in the morning and before I knew it I was eating over processed junk and NOT doing my workouts because I had no energy for them. (*gasp….I know….bad coach!)

I knew I needed to get myself back on track and fast, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Then I remembered my before photo and pulled it up on my laptop. I stared at the photo in disgust and knew if I didn’t get my act together I could easily slip back to THAT. I then pulled up a current photo of myself and put it next the before and man did something just click in my brain.

It was a click I had felt before….it was the click that propelled me onto this fitness journey a year ago.

While sitting there looking at the two photos I finally realized how far I’ve come. How much I have grown as a person. How much I have learned and how badly I want to help others reach their fitness goals.

I realized how I could NEVER go back to being that person again….I REFUSE to let that happen. (Those of you who know me know just how thickheaded I can be.)

So I pulled up a Word document and started typing out my goals. I made a list of things I want to achieve and I felt a new purpose wash over me as I did this.

I also shared my before and after with everyone I know on Facebook and Twitter. The messages and feedback I received were the motivation I needed. I was even retweeted by Beachbody on Twitter and that allowed me to connect with people I never spoke with before and answer their questions.

Knowing that I can help someone who wants to start their goal to a better life is one of the greatest things to me. I want nothing more than to see everyone succeed at this. To reach their goals. To find motivation. To find happiness and most of all health.

If you are someone who has been thinking about taking that first step to a new you please feel free to contact me. I would be more than happy to help you figure out what your first steps should be and to help you along the way.

Getting Extreme with ChaLEAN

My newest fitness journey began this week and the program of choice for me….ChaLEAN Extreme.

It’s another 90 Day in home DVD based fitness program and it runs in 3 phases much like P90X did – Burn, Push and Lean.

What drew me to this was the philosophy behind it… “Muscle Burns Fat.”  You want to build “lean muscle” so you can burn away that excess fat.  Chalene understands that the quickest way to burn fat is to build muscle, and lean muscle (you’re not going to bulk up and look like the Hulk doing this).

Now some people laughed and thought I would be bored with this after 2 Rounds of P90X (you know who you are) and after my first workout, Burn Circuit 1,  I agreed.

However, after sitting back and thinking about what I had just done during the workout I realized I needed to up my game to a new level. I needed heavier weight for this program because it is a different animal than P90X was. So the next day I headed to the sporting goods and picked up some heavier weights.

During my next workout on the program, Burn Circuit 2 I REALLY felt the difference. The new weights were just what I needed to get myself to failure by 10-12 reps and I really enjoyed the slower pace to the lifting.

Today’s workout with Burn Interval and I must say I really enjoyed it despite the nasty things I called Chalene while doing it. When I first popped the DVD in and saw we would be using 5lbs weights I thought this would be easy peasy but man was I wrong. Five pounds might not sound like a lot but when you are doing a bazillion bicep curls you feel it and beg for that last rep to hurry up and arrive! I really enjoyed the cardio kickboxing moves as well.

My biggest complaint with the workouts so far is the warm-up is too short. All you do is throw a few punches, a few leg stretches and you jump in. I prefer a longer warm up – especially in the morning so I do my own based off what I did with P90X and then start my Burn workout for the day.

Other than that I don’t have any other complaints so far.  I love that they are full body workouts so I work my arms, legs, abs, thighs, butt….you name it – everything is sore the next day and that makes me happy!

I look forward to seeing what kind of results I can achieve with ChaLEAN!

Now for a shameless plug:

Round 2 – Day 90 – The End

It’s official…today is Day 90, I just finished Yoga X and that means I am a 2 time P90X graduate! Woot!

This has honestly been the fastest 90 days of my life! Round 2 seems like a blur to me and I can’t believe how far I have come on this journey. (it’s almost like child birth…you forget the pain so you will be crazy enough to do it again.)

Those of you who have been following my blog know that I was not super strict this round. I’ve been playing around with substituting the fitness trail for some of the cardio or using it as an additional workout. I’ve also been using 10 Minute Trainer on days when I am pressed for time and I’ve been trying to tweak my calorie intake to figure out this lightheaded/lack of energy issue I’ve been having. (Blood tests all seem to be normal.)

I’ve also been trying to make sure that I can maintain the results I’ve seen and so far I have proven to myself that I can. I can have a cheat treat here and there and not feel guilty about it. As a matter of fact I usually end up sick and regretting it after so I guess that is a step in the right direction. I also find that if I skip a day or two of workouts I feel awful, stiff and sluggish. My body now craves this lifestyle and that makes me a very happy girl!

As always, the end of a phase means weigh-in and measurements so let’s just get to them:

Height – 5′ 9″
Weight – 156lbs (5lb loss over 90 days)
Waist – 27.5″ 2.5″ loss 90 Days (.5 loss from Day 60)
Hips – 35.5″ down 1.5″ overall (.5 loss from Day 60)
Chest – 34″  down 2″ overall (same as Day 60)
Right Arm – 11.5″ (same but leaner)
Left Arm – 12″ (same but leaner)
Right Thigh – 19″down 1.5″overall (1″ loss – Day 60)
Left Thigh – 19″ down 1.5″ overall (1″ loss – Day 60)
Body Fat -15.9% down 5.7% overall (.8%  – Day 60)

Next up for me will be a 90 Day round of ChaLEAN Extreme. I am looking forward to trying something new and I think I will like what Chalene Johnson has to offer since there is a cardio kickboxing involved. I will also continue on my quest to clean up my eating habits. This is by far one of the hardest things for me. I tend to do really well and then mess up along the way on days when I am pressed for time so I need to work on my planning. (especially if I plan on seeing my abs – Maybe a Chalene to-do list is in order here? )

As always, a HUGE thank you to everyone who has kept me motivated and moving toward my goals. Here’s to another 90 days of Beachbody workouts! Woot!

Bittersweet Endings…

I am entering my final week in Round 2 of P90X. These 90 days have truly gone super fast and to be honest I am happy it is almost done.

Now please, don’t get me wrong. I LOVE P90X. I LOVE Tony Horton and the results I have gotten from doing the program. I highly recommend it and Power 90 to just about everyone I talk to….I just need something new. I need to feel excitement for my workouts again and I believe that starting a new program will bring that to the table.

What will my next program be you ask? Well…I’ve decided to give ChaLEAN Extreme a shot. It is another 90 day program which also uses resistance and cardio workouts in 3 phases. (I’ll do a post about it before I start and will most likely do a weekly post once I start the program.)

P90X will always be my first fitness love. It has changed my life in so many ways. It has brought a bunch of amazing new people into my life (you all know who you are). It has given me the strength to achieve my goals and realize that I CAN do anything I set my mind to. It has allowed me to spread and share my new found knowledge and motivate others to better themselves.

Most importantly it has helped me to find ME again. I am sure I will return to it for another round…most likely after ChaLEAN Extreme. The bottom line is P90X works and those workouts will ALWAYS be a part of my fitness routine.

Thank you Tony Horton, Beachbody and my amazing P90X crazed twitter family…you guys keep me motivated and going!

Mish Mosh of Thoughts…

I have been neglecting this blog lately and I am disappointed in myself for doing that. There has been a lot going on here and my head has been swirling so I haven’t been able to pin point WHAT I wanted to write about. As a result, I decided to just sit back and write about whatever comes to mind which is why I have titled this “Mish Mosh of thoughts”.

I apologize in advance if I am all over the place…

First off I am in Round 2 – Phase 3 of P90X. I have slacked off a little bit and missed a few workouts over the past 2 weeks but I will make them up before the 90 days are over. The same thing happened to me in Round 1 and I just doubled up and plugged along like a trooper.

One of the reasons I have been slacking off is that I haven’t been feeling up to par lately. I have been sluggish, light headed and prone to headaches. I have tried playing around with my calorie intake and things improve for a day or two but then go back to this off feeling. I decided it was time to go to the doctor to see what was going on. EKG was fine and I am waiting for  blood results to see if maybe it is a thyroid issue.

I am still hopelessly in love with the fitness trail. My longest distance so far was an 8 mile walk/run last month. It was such a great feeling to know that I pushed that hard and stayed within the time constraints I put on myself.

Most of my walks/runs after that have been in the 3-4 mile range and I am now hoping to do them daily since my daughter goes to camp where the fitness trail is so I am there anyway…might as well get a workout in right?!

Since falling in love with walking I have started to run a bit more. Mind you I only run when I do the trail by myself because I feel like a complete and total moron when I run. I have pacing issues that I am working on and can only go about a 1/2 mile before burning out and needing to walk for a bit and then resuming a run again.

I would love to be able to do the whole 3 mile lap in a run by fall without needing those breaks.  For now my goal is the keep all walks at a pace of 16 min per mile or lower because I would love to do one of the half marathon walks in Disney next year and that is part of the rules.

Hmmmm…

I had my first Power 90 graduate last month and my husband is  finishing in 3 days! I am so excited, proud and happy for both of them! My friend is going on to do the Power 90 Masters Series and my husband is going to move up to P90X!

This past week I have also been approached by numerous people at my daughters camp who haven’t seen me in almost an year. They all want to know how I have kept myself going, what my secret is and I have been told by a few that I am their inspiration. It is a truly amazing and touching to have someone look you in the eye and tell you that. It is something I NEVER thought I would be.

Pull-ups….I have become obsessed with wanting to do them on the bar. I don’t have one in my house and have screwy doorways so the bars that just hook over the door don’t work here. I keep looking at the one on the fitness trail and I want to try it but I can’t get up the nerve. I am thinking about going to my friends house and trying her husbands out. At least if I can’t do it I will fail in private and not on an open to the public fitness trail. I know…way to be positive.

Other than that I just have lots of random thoughts swirling around in my mind which makes me feel like I have ADD. I am thankful for the fitness trail which allows me to have some time to talk about things with my friends or clear my head alone as I zone out to The Prodigy.

Lastly I would like to give a  HUGE thank you to my buddy for listening to me and helping to guide me the past few weeks. You mean more to me than you may ever know. XOXO

Round 2 – Day 60 P90X

Well…another 30 days have come and gone.  It’s amazing how quickly the weeks are flying by now that I am in Round 2.  My results this month have been more psychological than anything else. I can feel myself becoming more comfortable and confident with my new body. I am starting to realize that there is nothing I can do to change the way some people view me or to stop the jealousy that they feel. All I can do is take the steps I need to take to become a fit, healthy, well balance and happy person for myself and my family.

Now for the numbers:

Round 2 – Day 60:

Height – 5′ 9″
Weight
– 159lbs down 2lbs
Waist – 28″ down 1″
Hips – 36″ down .5″
Chest – 34″ same
Right Arm – 11.5″ up .5
Left Arm – 12″ up .5″
Right Thigh – 20″ same
Left Thigh – 20″ same
Body Fat -16.7% down almost 3%

Once again I am very happy with my results. I am able to do more push ups (although I still hate them and always will), and I can feel my cardio improving.

I recently wrote about how I discovered the fitness trail and how I enjoyed walking it. Well…yesterday I did 8.1 miles on it and even jogged most of that with the help of  The Prodigy and Blink 182 (Go me!). I don’t think I have ever been so proud of myself. I could have given up so many times and just went home but I kept pushing, I had a goal in my head and I was gonna reach it no matter what. Knowing that I have the strength to complete the goals I set in my mind is so empowering.

With that, I would like to once again thank those of you who keep me going. My inspirations, my fellow coaches, the haters, the drama majors and everyone who has told me that I inspire them. Thank you!

P.S. – I hate photos but, here they are….sigh.
(Sorry for crappy, low light self pics. I decided to add them just now)

Mirror, Mirror on the wall…

….we have never had a great relationship have we?

I have never looked at you and seen something that made me smile. Ok, maybe on my wedding day I did….I looked pretty darn good that day despite being chubby although it could have been the fact I was tan….hmmmm. Anyway….

I have worked my tail off for the past year and despite all of the compliments I have received, all the clothes I have had to give away because they were now too big I never saw it….until NOW.

I seem to have made a mental break through. I now see the new me. The smaller me. The fabulous me. And you know what? I gotta say……I kinda rock!

For the past year my body has gone through major changes but my mind…well….it was stuck. It was stuck on an image I had looked at in the mirror for years. An image of an overweight, unhappy person who wanted to change. A person who wanted to be seen for who she was on the inside. A person who wanted to shop in all of the trendy cool stores dammit!

Now….I am that person. Thanks to all of the hard work, sweat and discipline I am no longer overweight and unhappy because of it. I can shop in any store I want with out having to worry about what the largest size they stock is. I am no longer over looked….heck I am now looked at more often than I am comfortable with.

Of course, I will admit I still have my hang ups. Um, I’m human AND female therefore something will always bug me…that’s life and hopefully I will get over those trivial things.

And if I asked “Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who’s the fairest of them all? I am pretty sure it would say that I am. Because I am now proud to stand in front of the mirror…the same mirror that taunted me for so many years and say….I am beautiful.

Drama + Haters = Fuel for the Fire

Everyone has drama in their lives at one point of another. Some of us are blessed with it more often then others (that is total sarcasm in case you didn’t know).

I often walk through life wondering if I do anything right. I can never seem to make everyone happy. I always do something to piss someone off and most recently my fitness achievements have made me a hated person amongst certain circles of people – there is nothing worse than walking through a room and feeling a giant target on your back!

However, I have learned to turn that drama and target on my back into fuel for my fire. Instead of getting worked up over it and saying things that can’t change the way another person thinks I unleash my fury in my workouts. The more someone says I am crazy for doing the workouts I do, or refuse to give me credit for the work I have done the more it makes me want to succeed and show them how wrong they are.

Instead of sitting around moping over a disagreement or some new drama that has cropped up I do Kenpo or grab my sneakers and hit the trail. Both help me to clear my mind, keep a level head and improve myself in the process. It also helps me to realize that the important part is that I am happy!

I am finally reaching a point in my life where I am putting myself first. I am surrounding myself with positive people. I am realizing that I CAN’T make everyone happy…that is impossible without completely losing yourself. I am doing everything possible to ensure that I reach my goals and do the things in life that I want to do. I can’t stop drama from entering my life or make people respect the life choices that I have made but I can certainly turn those things into fuel for my fire and reach my goals and most importantly achieve self happiness.

Variety is the spice of life…

….and to me fitness as well.

I have recently come under fire from some people when they hear that I am not following the P90X schedule to a T.

They wonder how I expect to get results or know that the program is working when I don’t follow the design of it and do the workouts as laid out. My answer…”I’ve done it for 90 days and it works!”

Without a doubt P90X is like a well oiled machine! Follow the workouts as laid out (you gotta BRING IT here), truly follow the nutritional guide (which is a must if you want to succeed) and you will see amazing results!

However, I am in Round 2 now. I know what my “trouble areas” are and what I need to do in order to address them. I know that I have some nutrition weaknesses and I am making strides to correct them as well. I also like to change things up and keep my workouts interesting so I incorporate different programs into MY routine based on mood and time.

Beachbody offers a wide variety of programs and I am curious about them. If I see something that looks challenging and fun I want to try it. I don’t want to get stuck in a rut and reach a point where I dread certain days of the week because I HAVE to do a certain workout.

Over the past year I have figured out the I love martial arts based routines. I LOVE Kenpo in P90X and have recently tried the Kenpo Cardio+ from the P90X+ series. I have looked into TurboJam and ChaLEAN Extreme more because they seem to be a Cardio Kickboxing type of program and those are fun to me.

My overall goal in my fitness journey is the keep moving, keep burning, challenge myself and most of all HAVE FUN!

This morning I was going through my 10 Minute Trainer stuff and came across Tony Horton’s 11 Laws. This is a condensed version of it although I typed out the full REALITY card cause to me it is the most important one. I found it interesting that the first one was VARIETY and thought I would share them all:

Law 1: Variety. Variety is the spice of life and fitness. A lifetime of health and fitness is achievable when you can think outside the box. You have to mix it up all the time. Stay curious, creative, and stick with the kinds of workouts that you enjoy. A variety of exercises, workouts, and sports will allow you to avoid injuries, plateaus, and boredom.

Law 2: Consistency. Improvement and change occur when you do things often. Stopping and starting all the time will kill any momentum you need to succeed. You must find ways to stay in the game. Moderate forms of exercise, done consistently, provide far better results than the occasional full-body pummeling. A lifestyle that includes multiple forms of exercise five to six days a week guarantees results.

Law 3: Intensity. YOU’RE TOUGHER THAN YOU THINK. The fear of pain or injury from working out is a mindset steeped in failure. You must learn to “Find the Line.” Do the extra rep or two, increase your range of motion, and increase resistance as you get stronger. Intensity goes hand in hand with Variety and Consistency. The combination of the three work together as a triad that creates a platform for success. The programs provide variety. Your plan will keep you consistent.

Law 4: Purpose. Your purpose is to have a better life. Exercise and eating right help you feel better. When you feel better, you do more. When you do more, you meet other people. A healthy lifestyle gives us the energy to be better than before. We want to participate, share, communicate, and build a community have purpose in our lives. If you had never found Beachbody, you might be right back where you were isolated, with nothing to share, no purpose, because you weren’t doing anything with anyone.

Law 5: Reality. If you want positive, long-term change in life, accept the truth of your situation. Let go of your ego and find ways to love who you are right now. Living in the past, the future, and for others destroys your ability to stay in the moment. Life has peaks and valleys, ups and downs, lessons and celebrations. This is how we grow and learn. The way to live in this world is to live in the real world. Lift the burden of having to “keep up with the Joneses” all the time. Stop lying to yourself and everyone else about what you’re doing, what you’ve done, and what you’re going to do. Stop telling others about your hard workouts and clean diet while pretending that what you are saying is true. If it is true…guess what? We’ll know. Reality is about discovering the truth about the here and now. Reality is the ability to accept your present situation and love who you are through the process.

Law 6: Play. Take the onus off of weight, inches, and body fat percentages and put the focus on MOVING – from dancing, rock climbing, and mountain biking to table tennis. I love that ping-pong! Think in terms of “can do” instead of “look like.” Sports are fun and help develop balance and coordination which in turn accelerates your results. Jump, kick, run, spin, throw, skate, shoot, hit, score, compete . . . PLAY!

Law 7: Plan. SCHEDULE ALL WORKOUTS IN ADVANCE. This creates accountability. Plan an entire month ahead of time. Try to schedule as many workouts as possible with friends who have similar goals. WOWY was developed so that we could find an easy and effective way to stay accountable and work out together. Now we’ve got people in Trumbull, CT (my hometown), doing Power 90 at the same time with people in Hollywood. That is cool!

Law 8: Stress and Sleep. Stressed out, sleep-deprived people don’t eat right and exercise regularly. Stress depletes energy, strength, and desire, while poor sleep habits affect your moods and immune function along with cognitive and motor performance. Burning the candle at both ends makes it impossible to be fit and healthy. Don’t waste your time on gossip, ridicule, envy, self-pity, anger, guilt, arrogance, impatience, regret, manipulation, jealousy, fear, worry and anxiety. It’s too stressful, and it destroys the energy you need to stay healthy and fit.

Law 9: Loving It. Exercise and workouts involve commitment, determination, planning, consistency, and intensity. If you don’t like what you’re doing, there’s no way on earth you’ll succeed. Enthusiasm is a very big piece of the puzzle. Get creative and stay curious. If you enjoy doing Power 90 exclusively and it works for you, then keep doing it until it doesn’t. If you get part way through P90X and it’s not your cup of tea, then stop, and do something else. Something’s got to bring you back day after day, week after week. Love it (tolerate it) or leave it.

Law 10: Flexibility. Flexibility is the fountain of youth. Flexible people are much less prone to injury. Yoga and stretching allow you to bring more intensity to your workouts. Flexibility is the key component to becoming less vulnerable and more durable. Aging has a funny way of making everything we do harder. Staying limber and flexible is the way to prevent that from happening.

Law 11: Food and Supplements. You are what you eat! Food and supplements are your fuel. The right fuel supplies proper energy and recovery through balanced brain chemistry. The right supplements simply fill in gaps in your diet. You cannot substitute good exercise for a bad diet. A good diet and exercise have to happen at the same time. If you bring the same level of consistency and discipline to your daily fuel intake as you do the workouts, you’ll greatly reduce a lifetime of health risks, improve your overall quality of life, and see greater physical change in a shorter period of time.

I hope reading these 11 Laws helps you on your journey as much as they have helped me on mine!

Why do we want life to be different than it is? Why do we think about who we were and who we’re going to be more than who we are? We certainly talk a good game about who we are now. Why do we try to predict the future with the hope that wishful thinking is enough to change it? Life is NOT the way it was. It’s the way it is. Life is not our fantasy predictions of the future or our glory days of the past. Life is that thing that is happening to you as you read this. We fall into the trap of living in the past and future because right here is not good enough. Back then and up there are keeping you from right now.
